Japanese snack boxes are a great way to have an authentic Japanese experience in your own home to share with friends and family. As a result of our visits to Japan, we personally have subscribed to several options over the past few years.
Being stuck at home in Sydney due to COVID19, we have found that subscription boxes from Japan are a great way to both reminisce about our previous visits, and also look forward to the next time we will be able to visit! Opening your monthly Japan surprise box is a pleasurable experience, which we definitely recommend :).

Japanese Snack Box Options
There are two main types of Japanese snack box subscriptions.
- The first option is a contemporary Japanese snack box, which contains the latest and seasonal sweet and savoury snacks, usually with a specific theme each month.
- The second option is a traditional Japan treats box, which contains more traditional and seasonal snacks, again with a specific theme each month.
Our top recommended Japanese snack subscription boxes to devour are as follows:
- Tokyo Treat contemporary snack box which contains both sweet and savoury drinks, chips/crisps, Kit Kats and candy. Click here to check out and order your Tokyo Treat subscription box.
- Sakura Co traditional snack box which contains seasonal Japanese tea, cakes, cookies, sweets, treats and homewares. Click here to check out and order your Sakura Co subscription box.
Contemporary Japanese Snack Subscription Boxes
We love receiving contemporary Japanese snack subscription boxes – when they arrive we usually rip into them and see what we most want to try first!
As an example, we recently enjoyed snacking on the Tokyo Treat Premium Okinawa Snack Out Box for September – it included a range of Okinawan yummy treats including a Shikuwasa flavoured drink and potato chips (Shikuwasa is a Japanese citrus variety which I can confirm is delicious!). This box also included a pack of the Kit Kat Summer Ice Cream seasonal release, and many more items.
We love opening the box after it arrives, checking out the included guide, and over a period of a week progressively work our way through the box. We read about each item first before we try it, so we know what to expect. Some items are quite strange for our Australian palates – but most are wins and do not last for long!
This is where it is great to order at least 3-6 months of subscription boxes, as over that time you will get a large variety of snacks to try and learn a lot more about Japan along the way! Pricing for one month is $US35 per box, and depending on how long you subscribe the cost per box reduces.
We definitely recommend that you order the Tokyo Treat Snack box, as we can personally recommend it. They regularly get delivered each month to your home, in good condition and as promised! The standard Tokyo Treat box includes 17 full size snacks, including the following:
- Exclusive Japanese drink
- Rare Kit Kat Party Bag (12 pieces)
- 1.2kg / 2.7 lbs of Full Size Japanese snacks including candy and crunchy options
- Snack Guide and Member Reward Program

Traditional Japanese Snacks Box
We love receiving traditional Japanese snack subscription boxes – they typically have more unfamiliar items, and are a great option to learn more about the traditional culture of Japan.
As an example, we recently enjoyed exploring the Sakura Co Mochi and Sakura Tasting Tour Box. It included a beautiful Japanese Sakura bowl to add to our fun collection. The box included many Sakura (or cherry blossom) flavoured treats, including cakes, cookies, mochi (a chewy unique Japanese treat) and jellies.
Each Sakura Co Box also includes seasonal teas – in this case a Sakura Sencha (green) tea, which was delicious. There were also several different mochis to experience, and the guide helped us to learn more about the Kanagawa prefecture, and also about how mochi is made.
We really enjoyed working our way through the Sakura Co box, and were definitely looking forward to the arrival of our next box!
This is where it is great to order at least 3-6 months of subscription boxes, as over that time you will get a large variety of snacks to try and learn a lot more about Japan along the way! Pricing for one month is $US37.50 per box, and depending on how long you subscribe the cost per box reduces.
We definitely recommend that you order the Sakura Co snack box, as we can personally recommend it. They regularly get delivered each month to your home, in good condition and as promised! The standard Sakura Co box includes 20 authentic Japanese snacks, including the following:
