Benefits of Renting a Pocket Wifi for Japan

In our experience as travellers we can confidently state that either purchasing an eSim plan or sim card or renting a pocket wifi are great options to ensure that you have an affordable option to access data while on the go.  All options provide convenient access to the internet without the hassle of trying to find free Wifi.  As you should be aware, free wifi can be a pain, due to having to find it, then log in to each wifi hotspot, plus you never really know how secure these options are.  You can also use your accommodation wifi, however these are only available while you are in the building.

In our most recent visit to Japan (pre-COVID19) we used data continuously – for things like using Google Maps to get around.  We also regularly used data to look up information about our planned destinations, and to use waiting time apps for Disneysea Tokyo and Universal Studios Japan!  And we also regularly shared our experiences and photos with friends and family using social media.  Check out our article on the best apps to load onto your phone for Japan for more information.

Renting a pocket wifi is a great option to have easy access to data during your trip to Japan – and the advantage over a prepaid sim card is that you do not need to install it into your phone – but you do need to carry the pocket wifi with you and recharge it every night.  The Ninja Wifi pocket wifi router can also be easily used by multiple people and devices.  And with unlimited data it is very easy to use apps like Whatsapp to make phone calls and send messages.

Ninja Wifi Japan Review

We rented a Ninja Wifi router for our most recent trip to Japan (pre-COVID19), and it worked seamlessly for our whole trip. One week prior to our trip we visited the Ninja Wifi website, placed our order and promptly received our booking confirmation, so we were good to go.

The collection process was easy. After we arrived at Narita Airport, we found the Ninja Wifi counter and collected our pocket wifi package. The Ninja Wifi package includes the Ninja Wifi router, recharge cable, user manual in English and a small pouch. Our Ninja Wifi pocket wifi was fully charged and ready to be used. Getting started was as simple as turning on the Ninja Wifi router, and then logging into the wifi hotspot with our phones. We immediately had access to data, and we were ready to start our visit!

As travel bloggers we are high users of data, and this device easily handled two phones while we were on the go.  In the evenings we also used it for my laptop at our accommodation as it had better speed than our accommodation wifi, and we did not have to go through the hassle of logging in to the accommodation wifi each time we changed location.

We travelled in both urban and rural areas, and in each location, our pocket wifi worked with no issues.

At the end of our Japan trip, we departed from Haneda Airport in Tokyo, and it was very easy to find the Ninja Wifi counter in the departure hall to return our pocket wifi before progressing through check-in.

As a result of this experience, we would definitely recommend that you rent a Ninja Wifi pocket wifi for your trip. You can place your order online for collection the following day – as they have airport counters. Ninja Wifi is a quicker option compared with other pocket wifi rental options for Japan which do not have airport counters – instead, they post to the airport post office for you to collect, which takes longer to arrange.
