A popular desire for visitors to Japan is to see Mt Fuji up close, and given its proximity to Tokyo an easy option to visit is to book a Mount Fuji Day Tour.
While the Mt Fuji area is readily accessible from Tokyo by public transport, a day tour enables you to not have to spend extensive time researching and working out how to get to your preferred locations. The area around Mt Fuji requires use of trains, buses and ropeways to get around, and often by the time you wait for each service you will be wasting a chunk of your day to explore around Mt Fuji.
Note that COVID19 has caused access restrictions and some attractions are closed, so ensure you check current status before making your booking
A great range of day tour options are available through Klook, our recommended reputable online travel agency who has an extensive range of Mt Fuji day tour options to suit every itinerary and budget. Read further below to see the options and choose the one which will suit you best!

Mt Fuji Bus Tour Attractions
We visited most of the popular attractions around Mt Fuji during our recent visit, so can directly talk about each one! We did hire a car to get around as we spent three days exploring the area. There are ample genuine reviews for each of the Mount Fuji Day Tour options on Klook to assist you to work out which option will suit you best.
Be aware that seeing Mt Fuji can be elusive! Many people visit without getting a glimpse, while others are lucky to have great viewing weather. Others will have days where they just need to keep watching and hoping for a break in the weather. Therefore if you are planning to visit the area near Mt Fuji, also plan to do a range of experiences which will still be enjoyable.
As an overview of the area around Mt Fuji, the areas closest to Tokyo which are visited by day trippers are the northern Kawaguchiko (Five Lakes) area and the southern Hakone area. The key differences between each area are detailed below.
The Kawaguchiko area is mostly flat, so you will get great views of Mt Fuji wherever you go.

By contrast Hakone is a very mountainous and volcanic region, and you primarily get Mt Fuji views from Lake Ashi and on the northern side of the Hakone area.

Gotemba Premium Outlets is located between Kawaguchiko and Hakone and has amazing views of Mt Fuji. And there is also outlet shopping ? .
Mt Fuji 5th Station
Many of the day tours include a visit to 5th Station on Mt Fuji. There are four 5th Stations on Mt Fuji which are the starting points for the four different climbing routes that can be used to climb Mt Fuji during the climbing season (usually 1 July to 10 September each year).
Be aware that visiting the 5th Station requires a bus trip of 45 minutes each way from Kawaguchiko, so will really use a lot of your time so you will only get shorter periods of time in the other locations you visit compared with tours which do not visit the 5th Station.
If the weather is poor or snowing then usually you will not be able to visit the 5th Station, so expect in that instance that a substitute activity will be provided. Also as it is at altitude expect the weather to be colder and more exposed, so take warmer clothing.
Mt Fuji Day Tours
There are many different Mt Fuji tour options available to choose from, so here is a summary of our recommended options for each type of traveller. You can see the latest pricing information in each of the pricing boxes underneath each tour.
Most Popular Mt Fuji Day Tour Departing and Returning to Shinjuku Station
The most popular Mt Fuji Tour through Klook is the Mount Fuji Classic Tour: Oshino Hakkai, Gotemba Premium Outlets, and Matcha Experience. This tour is available with your choice of a Chinese or English-speaking guide, and departs and returns to the Shinjuku Prince Hotel.
This tour includes visits to the following locations:
- Lake Kawaguchi Viewing
- Fuji Bussharito Heiwa Park (known for spring cherry blossoms and autumn foliage)
- Oshino Hakkai
- Gotemba Premium Outlets
- Matcha Experience
Our comment: The views of Mt Fuji from around Lake Kawaguchi are amazing, and are definitely worth seeing. During the cherry blossom season this part of the visit will provide you with great options to see the blossoms! Oshino Hakkai has lovely clear ponds which can have great reflections of Mt Fuji on a good day. Note that Oshino Hakkai is quite touristy but is still worth a look.

Most Popular Mt Fuji Day Tour where you can stay in Hakone afterwards or easily catch the Shinkansen Train to Kyoto or Osaka
The most popular Mt Fuji Tour through Klook which departs from locations across the western and southern sides of Tokyo is the Mt Fuji & Hakone Day Tour: Lake Ashi & Komagatake Ropeway Day Trip from Tokyo. This tour is available with an English speaking guide and departs from Shibuya, Shinjuku, Kudanshita, Akasaka and Roppongi. Halal and vegetarian lunch options are available.
There is also the option on this tour to be dropped off at Hakone or Odawara Station, enabling you to stay for longer in Hakone (multiple hotel drop off points) or to easily catch the shinkansen train from Odawara Station to Kyoto, Osaka and beyond. The final drop off point in Tokyo is in Ginza.
This tour includes visits to the following locations:
- Mt Fuji 5th Station
- Hakone: Lake Ashi Boat Cruise
- Hakone: Komagatake Ropeway

Our comment: This is a great tour which will take you onto Mt Fuji itself, and also gives you the opportunity to have great views of Mt Fuji from the Lake Ashi cruise. While we did not go up the Komagatake Ropeway when we visited Hakone, I would definitely love to go up there as it is the tallest peak in Hakone with Mt Fuji views and would be an amazing ride as well!
The thing we really like about this tour option is that you can couple it with a Hakone Ryokan stay (click here to check out Hakone Ryokan options through Booking.com) afterwards, or easily travel on to Kyoto, Osaka and beyond on the shinkansen rather than having to return to Tokyo.
Best Family Friendly Mt Fuji Day Tours
Depending on the age of your children there are different experiences that we would recommend as follows.
For families with infants, toddlers, school age children in either elementary or primary school age our recommended options are below.
Mt Fuji Bus Day Tour: 5th Station, Oshino Hakkai, Ninja Village, & Lake Kawaguchi with 4D Experience and Lunch. This tour is available with a multilingual audio guide with languages including English, Chinese, Spanish, Thai, French, Italian, Russian, and Indonesian. This tour departs and returns to Shinjuku, and includes free hotel pickup from 8 hotels across Tokyo. Vegetarian lunch options are available.
This tour includes visits to the following locations:
- Mt Fuji 5th Station
- Oshino Hakkai
- Oshino Ninja Village
- Lake Kawaguchi with 4D Experience at Fuji Q Theme Park

Our comment: This is a great tour for families, as the 4D experience at Fuji Q theme park makes you feel like you are flying over Mt Fuji, and the Oshino Ninja Village is a great option for kids.
I visited the Oshino Ninja Village with our youngest child, then aged 10 years old (while the older kids went with my husband to Fuji Q theme park). He loved trying out the Ninja obstacles, as well as throwing shurikens and getting to use a blow dart. The lunch facilities and on site ninja show are also great options for families.
Mt. Fuji and Hakone Day Trip from Tokyo: 5th Station, Hakone Pirate Ship & Ropeway, and Gotemba Premium Outlets. This tour is available with either a Chinese or English-speaking trip conductor and a Chinese or English video translation service. This tour departs from and returns to near Shinjuku Station.
- Fuji 5th Station
- Hakone Pirate Ship
- Owakudani Ropeway
- Gotemba Premium Outlets
Our comment: The pirate ship cruise is a great option for families to relax and enjoy the views of Mt Fuji from Lake Ashi, and the Owakudani Ropeway is a great option to see an active volcanic area. It is definitely a memorable experience! Note that the Owakudani Ropeway is closed periodically when higher volcanic activity occurs, which usually does not affect visiting other parts of Hakone.

Fuji-Q Highland Q Pack with One Day Free Pass and Highway Bus Transfer
While this is not a day tour, it is a great day trip package to visit Fuji Q Highland theme park, which has some of the top roller coasters in the world, all with a back drop of Mt Fuji, and is a great option for thrill seeking teenagers to have a great day out, and hopefully also catch many views of Mt Fuji along the way.
The Fuji-Q Highland Q Pack with One Day Free Pass and Highway Bus Transfer package includes:
- 1 day park admission + Free Pass ticket for unlimited rides within the park, not including the ‘Super Scary Labyrinth of Fear’ admission fee.
- Round trip shuttle bus to Fuji-Q Highland from Tokyo Shinjuku bus terminal

Our comment: Our teenage children loved visiting Fuji Q theme park and yours will too. There are many great rides and it is a uniquely Japanese style theme park to experience. Make sure you check the forecast before booking as many of the rides stop operating if it rains.
Best Mt Fuji Day Tours which include an Onsen Experience
There are some Mt Fuji Day tours which include and onsen experience. Be aware that you usually have separate male and female bathing areas. Each onsen area requires you to be naked with no exceptions.
If you have tattoos ensure you check in advance to see whether you will be able to enter the onsen. If you have small tattoos you can purchase skin coloured patches to cover them (look for them while you are in the Tokyo shops), however if you have larger tattoos you may not be able to enter.
Fuji Onsen & Gotemba Outlets Tour. This tour is available with an English speaking guide, and departs from Keio Plaza Hotel Shinjuku and returns to Shinjuku Station.
This tour includes visits to the following locations:
- Mt Fuji 5th Station
- Lake Kawaguchi Viewing
- Fuji Chobo no Yu Onsen
- Gotemba Outlets

Our comment: This is a great tour which will take you onto Mt Fuji itself, and also gives you the opportunity to have an onsen experience in the countryside. We really enjoy experiencing Japanese style onsens.
The first time can be a bit out of your comfort zone, but no-one looks and it is a truly Japanese experience. Many onsens do have private onsens you can book if you want to have a couple experience together or if you have tattoos.
