Benefits of Renting a Pocket Wifi for Japan
In our experience as travellers we can confidently state that either purchasing a sim card or renting a pocket wifi are great options to ensure that you have an affordable option to access data while on the go. Both options provide easy access to the internet without having to waste time trying to find free Wifi. Free wifi sounds great in practise, but in reality it can be difficult. First you have to find a hotspot, then log in to each wifi location, without ever knowing whether you will have a great or poor connection… In addition there is an issue with regards to the security of each public free wifi hotspot. You can also use your accommodation wifi, however these are only available while you are in the building.
In our recent visit to Japan we regularly used data – looking up Google Maps to get around (and not wanting to muck around with trying to download the offline maps…). We also regularly used data to research information to plan each day. We also found using the ride waiting time apps for Disneysea Tokyo and Universal Studios Japan an essential requirement! We also regularly shared our experiences and photos with friends and family using social media. Check out our article on the best apps to load onto your phone for Japan for more information!
Renting a Japan Wireless pocket wifi is a great option to have easy access to data during your trip to Japan. While there is also the option to purchase a pre-paid data only sim card for Japan, the advantage is that you do not need to install it. The downside is that it is an extra item to carry and you need to remember to recharge it each night. Pocket wifi can also be easily used by multiple people and devices, and we also use them regularly to communicate using apps like Whatsapp to message and call each other. Renting a pocket wifi with unlimited data makes it very easy to get information on the go and stay in touch.

Japan Wireless makes it really easy to pre-book your pocket wifi online, and then collect it from the airport post office when you arrive in Japan, or get it delivered to your hotel. Of note is that the Japan Wireless pocket wifi cannot be delivered to a private holiday rental such as AirBnB. You can however get your Japan Wireless pocket wifi shipped to the closest or most convenient Post Office ready to be collected.
All Japan Wireless pocket wifi rentals include a free backup battery to ensure you never run out of battery!
At the end of your visit you can easily return your Japan Wireless pocket wifi by using the pre-paid and self-addressed return envelope included in your package to mail it back. There are post boxes in the departure halls of all airports so this is a really easy option.
When you visit the Japan Wireless website, your choices are whether to rent a Premium pocket wifi or a Business pocket wifi. Each product has a page with further information. Of note is that both pocket wifi options offer unlimited data at great speeds, and unlike many other pocket wifi options for Japan there is no throttling of your speed after you have used your daily data limit. Also, both pocket wifi options include a free backup battery as a standard inclusion at no additional cost.
You can place your order for delivery the following day – if you need a last minute option! But you do pay an extra fee if you require express shipping.
Japan Wireless also offer an optional Damage Insurance for an additional cost of 30 Yen / $US 0.26 per day, which covers 75% of the fees payable in the event of loss or damage. You can select this option on the product order page. This option is very worthwhile as the fees for loss or damage are substantially higher.

We are travelling round with one of these at the moment actually. So handy! It came with our airbnb rental where they had one instead of a regular modem and we can take it out and about with us. A great extra feature!
Sharon, it is great to hear that it is working out well for you, and I hope you are enjoying your visit to Japan!
