There’s a lot to think about when comparing pocket wifi providers and products such as price, speed, amount of data, battery life, and number of devices it can handle. Be aware that it is a very normal marketing strategy for companies to promote their products in the best possible light while downplaying any negatives. Therefore, it is important to closely check out details when comparing. In the following FAQs we’ve highlighted a number of things to look out for.

How much does pocket wifi cost in Korea?

Renting a pocket wifi in Korea is very affordable, particularly when compared to the total cost of your trip. It may cost you as little as 2-3 dollars a day for unlimited data depending on the length of your holiday.

However, it is important to carefully check the price that a company is offering before ordering a pocket wifi device. It’s very common for companies to promote a spectacularly low per day rental price on their websites but when you look closer it will be for a pocket wifi with a lower data limit, not unlimited data.

What is the speed of the pocket wifi device?

Another thing to watch out for when comparing pocket wifi companies is the speed of the pocket wifi device. Most Korean telecommunication companies and pocket wifi providers promote the fastest possible internet speed – ranging from 150 Mbps (megabytes per second) to 612 Mbps for downloads, but these are just theoretical maximums that aren’t possible in the real world.

A better indication of actual speed is the average speed which for most provider is around 40 to 50 Mbps but under certain circumstances the speed may be much lower or a little higher.

The actual speed of any wi fi in Korea is affected by heaps of factors such as: (1) network congestion (the number of people using a network in the same area at the same time; (2) the number and location of base stations/towers in an area; (3) the number of devices you have connected; (4) the wifi device itself; (5) the use of a VPN; (6) the router position (how far you’re from it, and the blocking of signals by walls and doors); and (7) even the weather.

Expect to get unreliable signals and lower speed if you are in rural areas, in mountainous regions, underground or in buildings with thick walls.

We recommend not paying too much attention to the marketed speed of pocket wifi devices as long as they support 4G (which all of them do) and they use a major network provider like Korea Telecom (KT) or South Korea Telecom (SKT).

Which Korean wifi provider has the best coverage?

The internet coverage you can expect to get has very little to do with the pocket wifi device or company that you rent the device through. The main thing which determines the internet coverage is the mobile network provider that is used.

When you go to rent a pocket wifi in Korea, the main networks you can expect will be KT and SKT. Regardless of which mobile network is used, you can expect good internet coverage, but remember the factors affecting speed and reliability that we mentioned in our our answer to the speed question.

It’s natural that travellers want the best bang for their buck (the most data for the cheapest price) when choosing a device for wifi in Korea. On Korean pocket wifi websites you might see statements like ‘unlimited pocket wifi in Korea’ or ‘unlimited’ data. In Korea you will definitely get unlimited data without any speed throttling limits, unlike some other countries.

What is the battery life of the pocket wifi for Korea?

One of the great features about using a pocket wifi in Korea is that you can get internet access without worrying about draining the battery of your mobile phone.

When you start comparing providers, you will discover that companies will advertise battery life of around 8 hours. At the end of each day, you simply recharge your device.

The battery will discharge more quickly the longer you leave it on, the more data you use and the more devices you have connected. We recommend turning your pocket wifi off when you’re not using it. This saves the battery with the added bonus of not having your eyes on a device too much so you can better appreciate what is around you. If you’re expecting to use the device heavily, think about renting a powerbank or backup battery through your wifi provider or bring your own, which you can also use to recharge your mobile phone.

What are the pros and cons of using a Prepaid Sim card?

Like pocket wifi devices, sim cards are easy to use, easy to carry around (because it’s in your phone) and provide lots of data. They are also safe and secure and there’s no risk of roaming charges. Some sim card options also offer a local phone number.

A prepaid sim card is probably best for solo travellers with a small number of devices or for groups of people that are regularly separating. For groups that are regularly separating and need to stay in touch, each person would need a sim card. An advantage compared to pocket wifi devices is that you have one less device to worry about

A downside of sim cards is that only the person with the sim card has internet access. If travelling with other people, the rest of the group would not have internet unless they get sim cards as well. Another option is that the person with the sim card could set up a mobile hot spot but it might drain the phone battery quickly, would use more data, and people would need to stay together.

Sim cards can also be slightly more complicated to set up when compared to a pocket wifi device. Before purchasing a sim card, make sure you check with your phone provider that your phone is unlocked.

Sim cards can be easily purchased through online providers. You can also buy them at the airport, electronics stores and convenience stores. if you have a newer generation mobile phone you may alternatively be able to use the eSim (or embedded Sim) feature of your phone to purchase a prepaid eSim plan for your destination.

The option to rent a pocket wifi in Korea is best for larger groups who are staying together and sharing use of the device. They work as a portable wifi hot spot that can connect multiple devices. They’re also great for solo travellers and couples with numerous devices who want to preserve their phone battery.

Pocket wifis have a long battery life, which enables you to preserve the battery in your phone. It’s still a good idea to switch off the pocket wifi when you don’t need it. If you are expecting to use it heavily, renting or bringing a power bank or backup battery is still a good idea.

Pocket wifi devices are very easy to set up, use and recharge and they come with heaps of data.

They’re a little more expensive than sim cards but if shared between friends the price can actually be cheaper. Another small downside is that a pocket wifi device is one more device to carry and worry about. Also, if you’re sharing the device between a lot of users and devices requiring heavy amounts of data, the data can be used up quite quickly.

What are the pros and cons of buying a pocket wifi device?

Buying a pocket wifi device shares most of the same advantages and disadvantages as renting a pocket wifi. You pay once for the device, which can be bought through companies such as Solis, and it can then be used in many countries.

To access the internet, with companies like Solis, you can then buy day passes or a plan for the country. Alternatively, you can buy a sim when you get to the country you are travelling to, then put it in your pocket wifi device.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using your normal mobile/cell provider?

Using your normal mobile/cell phone provider can be the easiest and most cost effective option to get internet when travelling, if your provider has a good international plan or overseas roaming package.

Speeds when using your normal provider may not be as fast as other options such as buying a Sim or renting a pocket wifi. There also may not be as much data as available with other options. It’s important to do your research with your mobile or cell phone company and work out what they offer for overseas travellers. After doing your research, compare it with other options such buying an eSim plan, sim card or renting a pocket wifi.

Another important thing to be aware of (if you don’t do your research and plan ahead) is that there is a risk of massive extra charges if you forget to turn off data roaming when you’re travelling overseas.

What are the pros and cons of using free public wifi?

The main advantage of using free public wifi is that there is no cost to you.

A very common concern with using free public wifi is data security. Our view is that using public wifi is safer than in the past. This is because many websites are now secured and encrypted. Encryption jumbles up data making it harder to steal. Look for the padlock symbol in front of the web address to ensure that the website is secured. Using a VPN also increases the security of your data.

However, while free public wifi may be safer than in the past, it is still not totally safe. Not all sites and apps are secure. Also, not all public hotspots are legitimate which makes such hotspots very unsafe. You may also have unsecured files on your devices which could be illegally accessed.

The other issue with using free public wifi is that it can be time consuming and annoying to find a public wifi hotspot. The hot spots can also be unreliable and slow to the point of being unusable. We believe that sim cards and pocket wifis are much better, safer, more convenient and are available at very good prices.

Hi Tony, nice report, I am glad to read your comment on Google maps as a way to find your way in South Korea, this must have changed since I was there in the fall of 2016 when “Google Maps” was limited in scope for navigation, it was ok for major highways mass transit .
